THE HOUSE OF CARDS

His new house is now a
reality.
As is the excrutiating
mortgage payments.
He won’t rest until they've been
there a year.
Only then will it seem real.
Yup, after twelve
months, he’ll put up his feet
for the first time.
And his wife will let
her hair down.
And then she’ll smile.
Finally.
Only then, will it seem doable.
They’d be bonafide.
Only then, will he unpack.

  1. Feet up, hair down -- nice. I've always found it's the other way around for me -- only when I finish unpacking the last thing do I feel at home. Good way of conveying the strangeness of moving home.

  2. As a man, the weight of this reality can be completely overwhelming. Thank God she smiled...otherwise, better call the mover and real estate agent back. Enjoyed this, Anthony.

  3. Quite ironic. That is a little bit how I am feeling now. We've been in our house for just over a year now and we actaully said to each other..."get the first 12 months out of the way and it'll get easier."
We actually moved 260 miles away from our families.

    Nice piece, Anthony.

  5. This is the same thought I had when I bought my bookshop...give it 12 months, then I will feel like I belong.
    Great piece, Anthony.

  6. You've made a good point. Great poem. I think each time we've moved it has taken some time before we really feel the new place is ours.

  7. You said a lot in 68 words, Tony. (I counted them, because I was hoping there would be exactly 52 words. Even 54, with the 2 Jokers, would have been fine, but I won't make a fuss about it. Honest!)

But I really do like all 68 words and I know the feeling. Moving into a new house is nerve-wracking, especially if you're not real sure you can make the mortgage payments. He really should unpack, though.

  8. Heavy. I like how you built this up, like that house of cards you mentioned.

I love to read these and then listen. I get to enjoy it twice.
