J.J. ABRAMS TO TACKLE FICTION ... REALLY?

OK ... Some will probably not agree with me but ... Am I alone in thinking that J.J. Abrams is completely overrated as a writer?

Sure, his premises start out promising enough -- think "Lost" or "Alias" -- but inevitably the man (and his creative team) always seem to write themselves into a corner with no way out.

Hopefully, he'll fare better in his next venture -- novels. Abrams has just inked a deal with Little, Brown and Company to pen an us yet untitled thriller. Little Brown says that the book would be a collaboration (is this a red flag?) with award-winning novelist Doug Dorst and come out in the fall of 2012 through the Mulholland Books imprint.

In addition to his TV work, Abrams' movie credits include "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible III" and the upcoming "Super 8."

Let's just hope he can write his way out of the paper bag known as fiction...

  1. I'm with you - he has a decent body of work (loved the first seasons of both LOST and Alias), and Fringe is a guilty pleasure. BUT his big screen writing has been nothing spectacular especially Cloverfield and Forever Young (think the word I'm looking for is ugh....). Once again, the publishing industry is throwing $$$ at someone with a "name" while thousands of more deserving and talented writers can't get up to bat. And they wonder why legacy publishing is crashing and burning....maybe they want to buy my old 8 tracks and cassettes.....

  2. I'm not overly familiar with JJ Abrams, but I do know that plenty of writers/screenwriters are getting the job on something other than talent. Namedropping, good looks...there is something else out there that gets one fame and $.

  3. I don't think he's getting by on good looks. Just sayin'. Can't you just hear the TV/Movie execs pitching this? Built in cross-over audience potential is huge! Reading is the next big thing!

  4. His work has always been a mixed bag, but I truly like some of this stuff.
